U.S. DOT Number Information Tab
Vehicles that are registered and used in conjunction with a business that meets the definition of a commercial vehicle must obtain a U.S. DOT Number before said vehicle may be used. The U.S. DOT Number serves as an identifier to differentiate between companies with the same name. If the combined or actual weight of a commercial truck, load and trailer exceeds 10,001 lbs., or if the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating of the truck is 10,001 lbs. or greater, a U.S. DOT Number is required. Regardless of the actual vehicle weight, if the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating is over 10,00l lbs. a U.S. DOT Number is required. Non-commercial vehicles do not require a U.S. DOT Number even if the vehicle weight or a combination weight of the vehicle and load or trailer exceeds 10,001 lbs. or more.
